Fantasy is big in my household as we are all superhero and science fiction fans. However, the Star Wars movie franchise has finally taken over this family. Like his father, my son is a fan of the Star Wars movies from the 1970s-1980s. Unlike his father, my son is crazy obsessed with anything having to do with Star Wars.

May 4th is unofficially considered “May the Fourth Be With You” Day for Star Wars fans. Comic Book stores around the country also host an annual National Free Comic Book Day on the first Saturday of May. Hi De Ho, our local comic book store, consolidated these two events into one big party this past Saturday. We returned from Hi De Ho and made out like bandits. Tons of free comics, as well as free superhero posters and figurines, were at our disposal.
Luckily, Orange County’s Yorba Linda Library hosted a community event called the Star Wars Party on May 11th, so we had yet another Star Wars activity to participate in. Star Wars fans gathered at the Yorba Linda Library for this fun-for-all-ages event. There were some arts-and-craft activities involving decoupaging Star Wars clip art onto rocks or making handheld Princess Leia, Yoda or R2-D2 paper masks. Kids had a “blast” participating in role-playing games involving Nerf Guns, Stormtroopers and Rebels. A local Star Wars social group performed a realistic lightsaber demonstration and later, the public was encouraged to pose for pictures with the same Star Wars cos-play characters.
Sharing a fun experience with your family is priceless. Participating in three fun experiences with a group of strangers — who share in one’s love, obsession and admiration for fantasy — is equally as rewarding.
